Plan SEO and local SEO: which pages a business actually needs
Connect service pages, genuine local information and useful guides. With a page plan, a priority list and guidance for Germany, Kosovo and Albania.
A useful website needs a clear purpose for each page. Start with what you actually offer and connect service pages, local information and guides into an understandable journey.
For businesses redesigning their website, explaining new services or addressing several countries. The examples illustrate a planning approach and are not documented client results.

1. First understand the decision behind a search
A search for a nearby painting company, a question about wall-paint drying time and a search for exterior painting describe different situations. One person wants to choose a provider; another first wants to understand something. Putting all the terms into one long homepage text does not create a useful offering. The website needs suitable answers and understandable transitions between them.
Start by collecting real questions from phone calls, emails and initial conversations. Alongside each, note the service offered, the area served and the information often missing before an enquiry. Existing search data adds to this picture. A term is useful when it fits your offering and can be meaningfully answered on a page. A high assumed search frequency alone does not justify another page.
Google describes helpful, understandable content and a clear structure as essential foundations. This does not imply a ranking guarantee. In planning, what matters is answering a visitor's specific question and making the content accessible to search engines. Google Search Central: SEO basics ↗
2. Four page types with different jobs
| Page type | Purpose | Useful content |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage | Put the company in context | Offering, suitable audiences, real projects and next steps |
| Service page | Prepare for commissioning work | Scope, requirements, process, limits and contact route |
| Project page | Show the work understandably | Starting situation, task, specific implementation and verifiable result |
| Guide | Answer a subject-specific question | Explanation, example, decision aid and relevant continuation |
A service page can be detailed without explaining every basic question itself. It can link to a suitable guide. Conversely, the guide leads to the service when implementation support would help. Label links so their destination is clear. A large collection of unrelated links at the bottom helps less than a link at the point where the next question arises.
Check each planned page with one simple sentence: after reading it, what decision can the person make? If several pages offer the same answer with swapped terms, combine their scope or define their purposes more precisely.
Also have someone who has not been involved in the project read the draft. They should be able to identify the offering, important requirements and next step without extra explanation. Clarify unclear terms from that conversation before publication. This simple content check adds an actual reader's perspective to technical testing tools.
3. Local SEO needs genuine local information
Local content is particularly helpful when it explains a practical difference: which places are actually served? Is there a travel charge, a drop-off point or particular appointment availability? Which projects from the region may be shown? Such details help visitors more than a list of every nearby town. A company can have a large service area without claiming a separate location in every place.
Google identifies relevance, distance and prominence as major factors in local results. A better local position cannot be bought from Google. This limits the promises an agency can responsibly make and makes accurate information more important than supposed shortcuts. Google: understanding local ranking ↗
For the Business Profile, first check ownership and existing listings. Name, address or service area and contact details must reflect the real business. Do not simply create another profile when access is unresolved. The appropriate solution depends on the existing listing and your authority to manage it. Google: Business Profile guidelines ↗
4. Use project examples as evidence of your work
A project gallery becomes more useful when it explains what was actually done. Describe the initial situation, agreed task, a relevant decision and the delivered result. A screenshot alone shows a design, but not whether text was reorganised, contact routes simplified or content moved into another system. These distinctions help future clients assess the work.
Separate observations from measured outcomes. If reliable data is unavailable, do not claim enquiries rose by a certain percentage. A verifiable result can also be a delivered website with documented service pages and a working contact route. Obtain the necessary permissions for images, names and project details, and make your actual contribution clear.
5. Distinguish Germany, Kosovo and Albania meaningfully
A country edition should explain how your offering can be used in that market. Check language, reachable contacts, available services and the collaboration process. German and Albanian are not simply interchangeable text lengths: terminology, examples and client questions need review by someone who confidently understands both the language and the offering. An initial machine translation does not replace that review.
Separate accessible URLs help reliably provide language and country editions. Visitors should be able to switch editions themselves. Google explains how related variants are connected using hreflang. This markup must match the actual pages; it is neither a substitute for translated content nor a guarantee of a particular presentation. Google: identify localised page versions ↗
Even when two countries use the same language, a separate local section may still be needed. Real differences in the offering and support are decisive. If there are no such differences, the team should consider whether one shared language edition is clearer.
6. A relaunch is about more than counting new pages
Before a major change, inventory the existing site: important URLs, organic landing pages, linked downloads and working contact routes. Assign a suitable destination to every important old page. Do not send an old service page indiscriminately to the homepage when a new page with corresponding content exists. Unsuitable redirects can confuse visitors and make subject matching harder.
- Document old and new URLs with their respective purposes.
- Check page titles, headings, internal links and contact routes.
- Protect drafts against unintended indexing before launch.
- After launch, check redirects, accessible pages and indexing.
- Record owners and dates for follow-up checks.
Plan maintenance too: who updates services, opening hours, project examples and contacts? Without ownership, even a clean relaunch becomes inaccurate over time. A small monthly review of commercially important pages is often easier to sustain than a major cleanup after several years.
7. Create a manageable first work plan
Start with a limited offering and one genuine customer question. Review the existing service page, add missing information and connect a suitable project example. Only then decide whether an additional guide or local subpage offers its own value. This produces work that can be checked individually.
Evaluation should focus on relevant search queries and contact quality. Record changes with dates and compare equivalent periods. Seasonality, new campaigns and a changed offering can also affect the figures. Ask not only whether visits increased, but whether the right people found an answer and a suitable next step.
8. Check AI visibility without replacing SEO with a trick
The central question for a business remains concrete: can someone find the right service and understand whether it fits their project? A short answer at the start helps orientation. The conditions then need to be right: the actual service area, suitable projects, service limits and a reachable contact route. An extra glossary of GEO, AEO and AI search does not answer these questions.
Google's current AI guidance requires indexed content eligible for snippets and the corresponding inclusion of the website in Search Console. Special text files or a dedicated AI schema are no substitute. The account setting therefore belongs in the review; a technically accessible page alone does not guarantee inclusion. Google: optimisation for generative search features ↗
For example, instead of merely repeating ‘landscaping in Hennef’ throughout the text, a landscaping page explains which work the business undertakes, which details an enquiry needs and what a published project actually demonstrates. The project report must identify the business's own contribution. Without approved growth data, it remains evidence of implementation; it does not retrospectively become an alleged SEO success story.
GEO research examines different systems and metrics. Improved source presence in a laboratory is not evidence of more website visitors. Our research guide puts these differences in context and separates source findings from a concrete work plan. SEO, GEO and reach: research and measurement ↗
9. Document a change so it can be evaluated later
| Field | What is recorded |
|---|---|
| Target page and purpose | Which decision should this URL make easier? |
| Change and date | Answer, service limit, project evidence or internal link; actual publication date |
| Baseline period | Complete comparable weeks with identical country, device and brand filters |
| Reach | Organic clicks and impressions; AI visibility separately |
| Quality | Aggregated suitable enquiries, no personal form data |
| Confounding factors | Seasonality, advertising, outages, relaunch or changed offering |
Google's generative search features report shows AI impressions. This figure must not be equated with actual onward clicks or enquiries. Available dimensions, the evaluation period and possible data gaps also belong in the log. Search Console: generative AI search report ↗
We initially plan eight complete weeks before and after a change as a comparison framework. This is a working decision, not a guaranteed minimum duration for SEO. With few visits or enquiries, observation continues longer. An increase from one enquiry to two is mathematically large but remains a very small dataset. New pages without their own history are evaluated separately from revised existing pages.
If a limited campaign needs to create demand quickly, comparing it with advertising makes sense. If URLs and navigation are changing fundamentally, implementation first needs a relaunch plan. The next action follows from that specific problem, not from a desire to publish yet another article.
