Local SEO for businesses: why your Google profile is more than a digital business card
Google Business Profile, local service pages and genuine reviews: sources, a measurement plan and practical steps towards better-qualified local enquiries.
Local SEO connects your actual services with people looking for them in your service area. A well-maintained Google Business Profile helps people find their bearings; your website answers detailed questions before an enquiry. The benefit appears in suitable contacts and orders. Profile views, call-button clicks and good positions are indicators, but do not yet establish that you have gained additional customers.

What is established, and what are the limitations?
What Google itself explains about local results
Google identifies relevance, distance and prominence or popularity as major local factors. Complete information helps with matching; reviews and references from other websites can also play a role.
Context: This is platform documentation, not an independent effectiveness study. The weighting remains unknown. Google explicitly states that a better local ranking cannot be guaranteed in exchange for payment.
Google: improve your local rankingReviews can have economic relevance within the context studied
Michael Luca linked Yelp reviews with restaurant revenue data from Washington. The study used rounding thresholds in displayed stars for a regression-discontinuity analysis and reported a revenue difference of 5 to 9% per additional rating star among independent restaurants.
Context: Historical US restaurants on Yelp are not German trades businesses on Google. The effect studied provides neither a revenue forecast for your company nor a basis for transferring the result to Google rankings. The linked HBS publication explains its own research from 2011.

Google defines the calls metric as clicks on the call button. Website clicks count clicks on the profile link. Not every metric is available for every business; performance data may also include interactions from Google Ads.
Context: These figures do not demonstrate completed conversations, qualified enquiries or sales. When comparing results with sales records, account for the different units counted and possible repeated contacts.
Google: understand your Business Profile performanceStart with your actual service area
An enquiry from a neighbouring town is valuable only if you can carry out the work there. First write down which services you provide where and the minimum job size that justifies travelling. That operational decision is the basis for your local content. A list of as many towns as possible is no substitute.
A Business Profile must reflect the real situation. Before setting it up, check eligibility, how you actually meet customers and any existing listings. Online-only businesses are generally ineligible; service-area businesses have their own rules. Do not invent branches to cover additional locations. Google guidelines for representing your business ↗
For an initial plan, a table of services, service areas, typical customer situations and contacts is sufficient. It turns the vague goal of 'more visibility' into a specific task: more suitable enquiries for a service you can actually deliver. It also identifies offers that should not currently receive more promotion because capacity is unavailable.
The profile provides orientation; the service page answers decision-making questions
Plan both contact points together. Someone selecting a service in the profile should not have to start searching from scratch on your website. A suitable destination page explains the scope, preparation, process and limitations. Current photos and approved project examples make the work described tangible.
| Contact point | Specific information | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Business Profile | Actual contact details and landscaping services offered | Visit the relevant service page |
| Patio construction | Materials, assessment of the ground, process and service area | Enquire about a project with dimensions and photos |
| Project report | The real starting situation and work completed | Discuss a similar project |
| Guide | Information needed for an initial assessment | Prepare documents for an enquiry |
A dedicated town page is editorially worthwhile only when you can explain something distinctive there: actual work, local contacts or particular delivery conditions. Otherwise, a clear service-area statement on the service page is often more useful to readers. Every additional page requires maintenance and a defensible purpose.
Measure the journey from search to a suitable order
Use a few consistent categories in sales: new enquiry, suitable enquiry, quotation sent, order placed and declined with a voluntarily stated reason. Record the source where known. A returning contact should not automatically enter the statistics as a new prospect; the same person may first click and later enquire by telephone.
Compare similar periods and record advertising, public holidays, weather and changes in capacity. For seasonal businesses, directly comparing two arbitrary months can easily mislead. If more people enquire but fewer projects fit, review the promoted service and area before expanding further.
Make local visibility a manageable routine
Assign an internal owner. They collect new project photos, report changed opening hours and approve specialist content. A brief regular review prevents small changes from creating contradictory information. Answers to customer questions also supply topics for the next useful guide.
- After completing an order, ask all eligible customers for honest feedback without selecting them by satisfaction.
- When handling complaints, understand the specific experience and respond factually; customer data does not belong in a public reply.
- Discuss suitable enquiries and actual orders monthly, not just reach.
- Develop the next piece of content from a recurring customer question and connect it with the relevant service.
Define what an agency handles and what your team must provide. Verification, ownership rights and approvals require your involvement. One-off profile setup differs from ongoing editorial work or management. This distinction makes offers comparable and prevents false expectations.

Frequently asked questions
Can Bissolux buy first place in Google Maps?
No. The setup offer pays for specific work on the profile. It does not buy an organic ranking. Advertising is a separate channel with a separate budget, and it also does not guarantee any particular number of orders.
Is a Google Business Profile enough without a website?
A profile may be sufficient for basic contact information. For services requiring explanation, your own website helps present scope, prerequisites and examples in detail. The appropriate combination depends on your customers' questions and your actual offer.
