Google Ads or Meta Ads? How to plan a useful first advertising test

Search advertising or Instagram and Facebook: a decision matrix, realistic budget calculation and evaluation based on qualified enquiries rather than clicks alone.

Google search adverts are often a suitable first test for offers people already actively search for. Meta advertising can provide an appropriate starting point when your offer needs visual explanation and you want to reach people on Facebook or Instagram. Decide based on demand, available material, sales process and a measurable business goal. No platform guarantees inexpensive or suitable customers.

Small businesses with limited advertising budgets seeking a first accountable advertising experiment rather than uncontrolled continuous advertising.

Search campaigns connect with active searches

Google describes search campaigns as a way to display adverts when people actively search for products and services. The campaign objective, target region, ad groups and budget are defined during setup.

Context: The instructions describe functionality, not an economic comparison with Meta. Search interest establishes neither sufficient demand in your service area nor a guaranteed order.

Meta optimises adverts for different responses

Meta describes models that consider different objectives such as clicks, video views and conversions. Our practical conclusion is that an inexpensive click is not equivalent to an acquired customer; the selected objective must match the actual project.

Start with your customers' purchasing situation

One company urgently seeks a provider for a known need. Another first needs to understand how a particular solution could ease its problem. These situations require different advertising. Do not start by asking which platform is currently popular. Write down when customers need your offer and what information they lack before making first contact.

Collect wording from real enquiries. If it contains a specific service and location, it can form a search hypothesis. If the offer is difficult to name, images and short explanations may help people get started. This is a working hypothesis for your test, not proof that one channel is inherently superior.

A test needs an offer people can buy and a clear question

Formulate a testable question: can this service in this region reach enough suitable prospects at acceptable total cost? Define what suitable means. For a trades project, the service area, project type and intended timing may matter. For a software service, company size, the existing system and a responsible contact may be the priorities.

Prepare a destination page or suitable form process that explains precisely this offer. Show genuine services and dependable conditions. An advert with an attractive starting price leads to disappointment if the destination page does not explain the included scope. Publish only material for which you hold the required usage rights.

  • One person approves the offer and budget.
  • One person handles incoming contacts.
  • Qualified enquiries, appointments and orders are recorded separately.
  • The test start, observation period and reasons for pausing are agreed in advance.

Separate advertising expenditure, management and sales costs

Do not budget only for the amount paid to the platform. The economic calculation also includes management, required content, a potentially new destination page and handling enquiries. A low daily budget can still be uneconomical if nobody follows up contacts or many unsuitable people are reached. A fixed overview of total costs protects against this distortion.

Then compare expenditure with the contribution margin actually available, not just revenue. Repeat purchases can matter, but must not be assumed certain without your own experience. Reserve enough capacity to support prospects properly during the experiment; otherwise, you are mainly evaluating an overloaded process.

With a small budget, answer one clear question

Our suggestion for a small business is to start with one priority offer in one region and a channel chosen for a stated reason. Too many variants spread scarce observations across confusing groups. Record changes. If the creative, destination page and price all change together, later developments become difficult to interpret.

A time window alone does not make a test informative. With few enquiries, results remain uncertain. Agree an interim discussion based on real data rather than a promised number of sales. Check technical faults and obviously unsuitable delivery immediately; assess economic viability in light of your customers' usual decision period.

Attribution helps interpretation but does not replace knowing your customers

Use understandable campaign names and agreed tracking parameters. Check the entire journey, including actual delivery of forms. Technical measurement should occur only within its intended, transparent consent framework. A customer may later return directly, change devices or order by telephone. Not every contact can be linked completely to a click.

Add a simple question in conversation: how did you hear about us? Record replies as additional information, not perfect truth. Compare platform reports with actual contacts and mark test enquiries. Do not blindly add conversions reported by several platforms; they may refer to the same order.

At the end of the experiment, record which hypothesis was supported, what remains unresolved and which change will be tested next. A reasoned pause can also be a good result. It protects the budget when demand, the offer or sales do not yet fit together.

Start with a manageable Bissolux advertising package

Our Google Ads package includes one search campaign with up to three ad groups. Our Meta Ads package includes one campaign with up to two ad sets and four static adverts created from your images. Both packages have a defined management scope and cover an approved advertising budget of up to €1,500 per month.

Compare both offers and choose the appropriate starting point. You pay the advertising budget separately and directly to Google or Meta. A new landing page, photography or video production and custom tracking programming are not automatically included. Existing conversion goals are connected within the agreed scope; there is no guarantee of leads or revenue. View the Google Ads service and package ↗

Your decision in practical steps

  1. Explained the specific purchasing situation and priority channel
  2. Defined a qualified enquiry before launch
  3. Planned advertising budget and additional costs separately
  4. Checked the destination page, form delivery and consent
  5. Evaluated contacts through to actual orders

Frequently asked questions

Which channel produces cheaper customers?

That cannot be answered responsibly without knowing your offer, market and enquiry quality. An inexpensive click may lead to expensive or unsuitable contacts. Compare total costs per qualified enquiry and later per order, using a sufficient observation period in each case.

Is €600 a recommended minimum budget?

No. The amount above serves only to make the calculation understandable. A suitable budget depends on demand, competition, target region and a customer's economic value. A test should have a financial limit accepted in advance and must not rely on money needed for ongoing operations.
