AI search in Germany: what the studies show and why your website still matters

58% use AI, while traditional search remains widespread: interpret representative Bitkom data and improve your website, SEO and contact routes.

AI is an everyday tool for many people in Germany. That does not mean everyone uses ChatGPT or traditional search has disappeared. Businesses benefit from a presence people can reach through different routes and then use to make contact. Your own website explains services, shows real work and brings reliable company information together. The studies support this role; they do not establish a fixed revenue increase from a website or AI visibility.

AI use in Germany: distinguish people from individual services

Representative telephone survey of 1,003 people aged 16 and over in Germany, calendar weeks 8–11/2026: 58% use AI at work or privately, and 34% at least weekly. Among AI users, 71% use ChatGPT and 50% Gemini; this subgroup comprises 579 respondents.

Context: Self-reported use of AI broadly, not a measurement of searches. Service percentages apply only to AI users and may overlap. Under-16s are not covered; 71% does not mean 71% of the population.

Finding information: AI complements widespread traditional habits

Representative telephone survey of 1,156 people aged 16 and over in Germany, including 1,030 internet users, calendar weeks 39–43/2025. Among internet users, 50% use AI instead of traditional internet search at least sometimes; 47% use traditional search exclusively. The question concerned the relative use of these two routes to find information.

Context: The percentages concern internet users, not all residents. They describe self-reported habits rather than shares of search volume, and do not separately study searches for local businesses. The survey took place in 2025.

Websites when choosing tradespeople: evidence for a specific sector

Representative survey of 1,004 people aged 16 and over in Germany, calendar weeks 7–10/2025: 26% use business websites to help them choose; 40% say the absence of a website rules a trades business out. Questions covered decision aids and agreement with statements about choosing tradespeople.

Context: A trades-sector context and self-reported responses, not measured revenue or observed contract awards. The release does not specify the survey mode. The finding does not apply automatically to every industry or demonstrate a loss of 40% of customers.

Google's AI search: established SEO fundamentals remain relevant

Google's documentation, updated 10 December 2025, identifies established SEO fundamentals for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for search-result snippets. Google does not require additional special AI files or particular AI markup.

Context: Platform documentation, not a representative study or independent evidence of results. These statements concern Google's search features, rather than every rule followed by ChatGPT or other providers. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion.

Many people use AI, but the denominator matters

A prospective customer might ask for an explanation of a service, find providers through traditional search and then open your website. This possible journey is more useful for planning than the claim that everyone now searches exclusively with AI. The surveys therefore distinguish general AI use, individual services and information searches.

58% AI use and 71% ChatGPT use have different denominators: the second figure describes AI users alone. Usage also includes drafting, translation and other tasks. Someone who uses ChatGPT is not necessarily looking for a tradesperson or an agency there.

Your website provides the fuller explanation

The 2025 search survey shows coexistence: half use AI at least sometimes, while almost half use traditional search exclusively. A website therefore needs to accommodate different entry points. Someone who has been recommended your name needs different information from someone initially searching for a specific solution.

The role is particularly tangible in the trades: 40% say they rule a business out if it has no website. This describes a stated selection rule in that sector. Our practical recommendation is to make your website a reliable place to assess your business: what do you offer, who is it suitable for, and how does working together begin?

Answer the questions people ask before making an enquiry

Start with your most important service. Describe its scope, typical prerequisites and actual service area. A specific explanation helps prospects recognise their situation. A sentence such as 'we offer individual solutions' leaves it unclear whether you handle the problem they need solved.

  • Service: explain typical tasks, included work and clear boundaries.
  • Experience: show real projects with their starting situation and a clear account of the result.
  • Process: describe the required information and steps towards a quotation.
  • Responsibility: keep company details, named contacts and working contact routes up to date.

Write the answers as readable text and add suitable original images. A service promise needs substance people can assess. Where prices depend on the project, explain the determining factors. Prospects can then prepare a better enquiry without needing all your specialist knowledge first.

SEO and GEO start with accessible, reliable content

SEO improves the foundations for search engines; GEO is used to discuss measures aimed at visibility in generative answers. For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google points to existing SEO fundamentals. Special AI markup or an additional AI text file is not a requirement for those features.

First check that important pages are accessible, linked internally and indexable. Give each service page an understandable title. Make essential information available as text and keep company details and an eligible Google profile current. Structured data should match the visible content.

This work creates a useful foundation. It does not give you control over whether a system selects or links to your page. Assess provider claims against specific work and documented observations. A promised first place in ChatGPT is not a useful acceptance criterion. Review Bissolux's SEO service scope ↗

Make the move from understanding to contact straightforward

Open your most important service page on a smartphone. Can someone unfamiliar with your business find the right contact and understand which details an enquiry needs? Test the form through to actual message receipt. A visible confirmation and a responsible team member belong in the process.

Then record suitable enquiries, quotations and won orders. Also ask people how they found you. Technical reporting does not capture every recommendation or later return visit. Individual AI mentions and growing page views are useful signals, but do not yet demonstrate additional sales.

Business Start: put your coordinated business presence into practice

With the Business Start package, Bissolux implements the foundations together: a website with up to five content pages in one language, an eligible Google Business Profile, up to five business mailboxes and five signature variants. It fits when your customers currently have to navigate incomplete information and inconsistent contact routes.

You supply company information, approved content, images and necessary access. The domain, hosting and provider licences are separate costs. Google's eligibility and verification remain prerequisites for the profile component; additional editorial work and special functionality require a separate agreement. Ongoing SEO work should be planned as a distinct requirement.

Compare the full service scope now and start your order if the package fits your starting point. We create an understandable presence with a usable contact route. Specific rankings, AI recommendations or additional revenue are not guaranteed. View and order Business Start ↗

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone in Germany really use ChatGPT or Gemini?

No. Bitkom's 2026 survey reports 58% AI use among people aged 16 and over. The 71% ChatGPT and 50% Gemini figures concern AI users alone. They must not be applied to all residents or added together.

Does my website need a special GEO file?

Google does not require a special AI file or particular markup for its AI Overviews and AI Mode. Established SEO fundamentals remain relevant. This is not a general statement about every other AI provider, nor a guarantee of a mention.

Does Business Start guarantee additional customers?

The package creates the agreed foundations for your website, Google profile and email. Additional orders depend on factors including demand, your offer and how enquiries are handled. They are not a guaranteed component of the service.
