At a glance
The short answer
Whether GrapheneOS fits your day depends on the particular functions you need. Turn ‘does this app work?’ into testable tasks: sign in, receive a message, change an appointment or approve a request. Check those workflows before completing your migration and prepare a usable alternative for anything you cannot afford to lose access to.
Make a short inventory of essential workflows
Begin with an ordinary day, then add occasional but important events: travel bookings, a new login, changing devices or recovering a forgotten password. For each service, record the required task, access details and an alternative. Mark tasks that could not wait until tomorrow if they failed. These determine the order in which you should test.
For example, a messaging application needs more than a successful launch. Check messages arriving with the screen locked, opening attachments and the calling or group features you use. A calendar should reflect an edited appointment on your other device. Write down the expected outcome in advance so someone else can understand what you actually verified.
Make an explicit decision about Google Play
Sandboxed Google Play is optional and runs without special system privileges in its profile. The official guide covers installation and the Play-services battery exception for background notifications. GrapheneOS: Sandboxed Google Play
Use your essential-app list to choose the setup you try first. Keep the initial arrangement manageable. If you later distribute tasks across several profiles, record where each application and account is configured. Extra separation should have a clear purpose and should not make urgently needed information unnecessarily difficult to find. Test the resulting routine, including switching to the right place.
Evaluate banking and payments separately
Banking compatibility varies by application; Google Play dependencies and additional checks can affect the outcome. GrapheneOS: Banking apps
Check the complete workflow you need: signing in, viewing information, approvals and regaining access after a restart. Use a provider-supported test option where available. Record the application version, date and outcome. Do not share banking passwords or approval codes with a setup provider; complete those personal steps yourself while they help with general configuration.
Google Wallet imposes separate device and certification requirements for contactless payments, including exclusions for modified operating systems. Do not treat Google Wallet payments on GrapheneOS as an assured feature. Google Wallet: Tap-to-pay requirements
A working banking application does not resolve that separate payment question. Before switching, decide which acceptable fallback you can actually use, such as your existing physical card. Check travel and work requirements too, before retiring your previous device. A substitute that only exists on paper will not help at the moment you need it.
Include a recovery check in the data move
Group your data into contacts, photographs, files, message history and account access. Check the export and transfer options for each service you use. A copy becomes useful when you can open selected items at the intended destination. Try a contact, an older photograph and an important document before deleting the originals. Record anything that still needs attention.
Keep the previous phone available during the transition and set clear completion criteria: essential workflows pass, important data has been checked and accounts remain accessible without that phone. Repeat your key tests after substantial changes. An earlier successful result provides a useful reference, but cannot promise the behaviour of every later application version or configuration.
Put it into practice
A test record that fits on one page
- For each essential app, record the task, expected outcome, date, version and outstanding issues.
- Check notifications with the screen locked, on Wi-Fi and using mobile data.
- Test sign-in, recovery and any necessary approvals using your own accounts.
- Open samples of transferred data and retain the remaining original collection.
- Prepare alternatives for essential tasks before completing the final switch to the new phone.
Common questions
Is an online compatibility list sufficient?
It helps you collect questions. Base your decision on a current test of your particular application, required features and configuration. Keep your own results and resolve essential functions that remain uncertain before committing to a purchase.
What if an application does not behave as expected?
Identify the exact failing step and check the current official guidance first. Change settings individually and review the effect. If an essential function remains unresolved, postpone the complete move and use the alternative you prepared.
